The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Ernest L. Downey (ASN: 1448656), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company G, 137th Infantry Regiment, 35th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near the Bois-de-Montrebeau, France, 28 September 1918. After being severely wounded, Sergeant Downey, refused to go to the rear, but continued in the advance until the final objective was reached and his company relieved.
