The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) William Graham Barnwell, Jr., United States Army, for gallantry in action as Executive Officer, Combat Command “A”, 3d Armored Division, in action against the enemy at Namur, Belgium, on the night of 5 September 1944. Lieutenant Colonel Barnwell volunteered to run enemy lines twice in order to reach division headquarters and return with necessary operations orders. His success made possible an effective, coordinated division attack the next morning. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel Barnwell, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
