Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 68 (October 3, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Joseph L. Baril (ASN: 31188803), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 10 August 1944, in France. Staff Sergeant Baril was assigned to duty as a squad leader with an infantry organization, and given the mission of holding a road block which protected a vital supply and evacuation route. An enemy force approached along a partially covered route, and believing it to be of considerable strength, the remainder of Staff Sergeant Baril’s squad became disorganized and withdrew. Alone, Staff Sergeant Baril remained at the roadblock, and by moving from spot to spot rapidly and supplementing his rifle fire by throwing hand grenades, he wounded part of the enemy and succeeded in forcing the remainder to withdraw. The dogged determination and indomitable fighting spirit displayed by this resourceful soldier reflect great credit on Staff Sergeant Baril and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
