The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Alexander Barbour (ASN: 0-2000699), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 411th Infantry Regiment, 103d Infantry Division. On 23 April 1945, while leading his platoon in an attack on Neuhausen, Germany, Lieutenant Barbour was painfully wounded in both legs. Lying in an exposed position and unable to reach cover due to his wounds, Lieutenant Barbour continued to direct his platoon and the fire of attached tank destroyer guns against the enemy emplacements. Not until the enemy had been routed from the town did he submit to evacuation. Lieutenant Barbour’s outstanding leadership and his refusal to leave his platoon in a critical situation reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
