The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Francis Dougeneck (ASN: 63410), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 102d Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Marcheville, France, 26 September 1918. When a patrol in charge of a wounded officer was entirely cut off by machine-gun and artillery fire, Corporal Dougeneck displayed great bravery by voluntarily carrying a message over grounds swept by machine-guns and later leading a rescuing party to the position.
