The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Frank F. Barbero, United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 130th Infantry Regiment, 33d Infantry Division during World War II. While his company was attacking the enemy near Asia in North Luzon, Sergeant Barbero learned of the plight of a patrol of guerillas, who were pinned down by intense enemy mortar, machinegun and small arms fire. He led his platoon with the aid of tanks forward the area to help evacuate the wounded. However, because of the rough terrain, the tanks were unable to approach the positions of the Filipinos. Knowing that any delay would be disastrous, Sergeant Barbero took six members of his platoon and with natural cover they worked their way forward, discovering the Filipinos in a small brush-covered area 50 yards away across the terrain. Crossing the open area with bullets hitting all around him, Sergeant Barbero reached the guerillas and assisted in the evacuation of the wounded and exhausted Filipinos until the entire patrol was safe behind the 130th Infantry Regiment’s lines. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
