Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 37 (August 15, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Robert Barber (ASN; 33308591), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Division Artillery, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 31 July 1944, in France. Private Barber was on duty with the forward echelon of an infantry division headquarters when it underwent bombing attack of hostile aircraft. During the action, one of the organic vehicles loaded with TNT and ammunition was set afire, causing a number of casualties. Private Barber ran to the vehicle and, aided by an officer, attempted to rescue the occupants. Disregarding his personal safety, he moved into the area made dangerous by the explosions of the wreckage to evacuate one of the casualties. The personal bravery and courageous unselfishness exhibited by Private Barber reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
