The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Chaplain) Peter J. Baker, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with as a Chaplain with the 95th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of Guisingen, Germany. On the afternoon of 29 November 1944, Chaplain Baker traveled alone on foot for two kilometers across terrain being shelled by the enemy in order to visit casualties at a Battalion Aid Station. On his way, German artillery and small arms fire pinned him down for 20 minutes, but he refused to turn back. Later in the day, Chaplain Baker was able to bring his vehicle to the aid station. Then he led all the wounded to safety in the adjoining town of Rammelfangen, carrying two of the casualties in his vehicle. Chaplain Baker’s gallant deed reflect distinct credit on him and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Corps of Chaplains.
