The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Carl R. Bailey (ASN: 37198659), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 314th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 18 November 1944 in France. While going forward under fire to deliver an urgent message to a cannon company, Private Bailey was wounded by enemy mortar fire. Though painfully wounded in the thigh and having sustained a compound fracture below the knee, he exhibited great courage and fortitude in crawling the remainder of the distance, delivering the message. His exemplary courage and unfaltering devotion to duty reflect highest credit on himself and the armed forces of the United States.
