The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Clyde H. Baden (ASN: 0-36333), United States Army, for gallantry in action as Commanding Officer of the 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 16 November 1950, Major Baden was in command of Company C, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, which had the mission of attacking and clearing the village of Kumi-ri, Korea. As the company entered the village, it came under intense small arms fire from well dug-in enemy positions on the heights overlooking the village. Under this covering fire, an enemy force began to circle behind the company and attempted to block its path of withdrawal. As a result of the enemy movement and the failure of radio communications, the company found itself fighting three independent actions. Major Baden, realizing the dangerous situation, exposed himself to the tremendous volume of enemy fire to contact each subordinate commander, coordinate the destruction of the military installations in the village, and personally lead the entire company across open terrain swept by incessant small arms and automatic weapons fire to safety. The devotion to duty, leadership, and gallantry displayed by Major Baden reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
