Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 366 (October 2, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Samuel R. Bacon (ASN: 34687800), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Germany. On 18 April 1945, Staff Sergeant Bacon courageously led his platoon through intense small arms fire, into a building in Nuremberg, Germany, and thus gained an excellent point from which to fire down on an enemy force, which was fiercely defending a railroad area. After placing his men into position, he opened fire with his rifle from a hole which he knocked in the roof, and then called a BAR man to assist him when hostile automatic fire smashed the tile around his head. Dissatisfied with the efforts of the gunner, Staff Sergeant Bacon borrowed the BAR and laid down a withering fire on the Germans. Within ten minutes he had killed three Germans and wounded about five, and was instrumental in forcing the enemy to withdraw. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Bacon, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
