The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Bruce C. Babbitt, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 7th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the Kwajalein campaign on 3 February 1944. When the main line of resistance was in danger of collapse from severe enemy pressure on his right flank, Captain Babbitt disregarded constant enemy fire and leaped forward into the open, thereby inspiring his men on the left flank to fight viciously against the main enemy attack. He then moved through open terrain and collected additional troops who had taken cover. He led them in a smashing attack against the enemy force on the right flank in the face of devastating Japanese fire and reestablished his defensive line. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
