The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) John D. Austin, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 349th Infantry Regiment, 88th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the European Theater of Operations during 1944-1945. Lieutenant Austin’s company was fired upon by tanks and a company of enemy after passing a town. Never seeking cover, Lieutenant Austin led his assault squads forward and charged the enemy’s emplacements with his weapon, killing four Germans and overrunning the defenses. Directing the launching of rockets, he routed two tanks, then searched a building where he too two German officers prisoner. Lieutenant Austin’s fearlessness and intrepid leadership were determining factors in the destruction of the strongpoint. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
