Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 78 (October 13, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Clair F. Askew (ASN: 0-1324817), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 11 August 1944. Second Lieutenant Askew was serving as a Platoon Commander with an infantry force which was launching a vigorous attack against the enemy. The hostile defensive positions were strong, and as a result of the massed fire the defending troops laid down, heavy casualties were inflicted on the platoon led by Second Lieutenant Askew and considerable disorganization resulted. With complete disregard for his own safety, Second Lieutenant Askew moved from place to place on the battlefield, exhorting and encouraging his men so that by his actions a reorganization resulted and in the ensuing charge, the objected was attained. Second Lieutenant Askew sacrificed his life, but by his supreme sacrifice an important tactical operations was successfully concluded. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Second Lieutenant Askew, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
