The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Technical Sergeant Leon Armstrong (ASN: 20457117), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 30 July 1944, in France. The infantry unit to which Technical Sergeant Armstrong was assigned to duty was fiercely attacked by an enemy force, and many casualties were suffered among his comrades. Observing fruitless attempts to extricate some of the wounded men, Technical Sergeant Armstrong voluntarily left the shelter of a comparatively safe position to crawl to the fallen man. Finding only one man alive and in need of immediate medical attention, Technical Sergeant Armstrong evacuated him by carrying him on his back under direct observation from hostile gunfire. By his heroic deed, Technical Sergeant Armstrong saved the life of a critically wounded comrade. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technical Sergeant Armstrong, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
