The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Leonard Antonacci (ASN: 42019315), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 13th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 16 April 1945, in the vicinity of Harttingen, Germany. While moving along a road not yet cleared of the enemy. Private First Class Antonacci and another man observed several enemy soldiers in a nearby woods. Private First Class Antonacci started in search of the enemy. He encountered seven Germans in a kitchen area and took them prisoner. While moving toward a house he knocked out an enemy machine gun nest, capturing the crew. In the house he captured sixty Germans, including an enemy battalion commander and his entire staff. His great courage and aggressive actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service.
