The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Mauro R. Aleman (ASN: 18231434), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 87th Mountain Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 14 April 1945, near Torre Iussi, Italy. During the attack on a strongly defended town, a platoon of infantrymen fought their way to within one hundred yards of the village, when they were slowed by enemy machine guns and riflemen emplaced in several buildings. On his own initiative, Private First Class Aleman made his way forward with his rocket launcher, and when within fifty yards of the enemy, commenced firing from a kneeling position. Although exposed to deadly return fire, he cooly placed two direct hits on the hostile positions, forcing the surrender of eight enemy and allowing the advance to continue. His gallant deed inspired all who witnessed it to press the attack with renewed vigor and to overcome all enemy resistance. Private First Class Aleman’s splendid heroism has truly earned him a high place in the finest traditions of the United States Army.
