Headquarters, 1st Armored Division, General Orders No. 62 (June 28, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Morton Albertson (ASN: 37169860), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 776th Tank Destroyer Battalion, 1st Armored Division, in action against the enemy on 27 March 1943 at Maknassay Pass, Tunisia. Private First Class Albertson was a radio operator in a vehicle committed in action against three Mark IV Tanks. His position was also subjected to continuous, heavy 210-mm. mortar and machine gun fire as well as uninterrupted fire from snipers. The vehicle was hit and set afire seriously injuring the vehicle commander and himself. In spite of his own wounds he removed his vehicle commander from the burning vehicle, placed him on the ground and administered first aid. His daring and heroic action saved his comrade’s life. The courage, self-sacrifice and concern for the welfare of his wounded comrade with complete disregard for his own reflect great credit upon himself and his organization and are deserving of the highest praise.
