The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Robert M. Aemmer, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, on 27 January 1944 in Italy. Technical Sergeant Aemmer led his platoon across 200 yards of open, shell-swept terrain in an assault on two enemy machine guns. Despite shell fragments which were striking the ground within several feet of him and direct machine-gun fire which missed him by inches, he succeeded in causing the destruction of two machine guns, killed five enemy and personally captured two Germans, thus enabling his company to continue on its mission. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
