Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 79 (April 12, 1945)
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Theodore B. Adkinson (ASN: 0-526016), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 743d Tank Battalion (Separate), attached to the 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 3 January 1945, in Belgium. Second Lieutenant Adkinson with two tanks, was assigned the mission of supporting a platoon of riflemen. When the tanks arrived at the objective the platoon was pinned down by enemy fire. Second Lieutenant Adkinson dismounted from his tank and after receiving orders from the infantry commander remounted his tank and moved forward. When the infantry troops withdrew according to plan, Second Lieutenant Adkinson placed his tanks in position to cover their movements. While dismounted and directing his tanks he was wounded but gallantly waved his tanks to the rear to avoid further casualties. Against his protests, infantrymen moved him to safety. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Second Lieutenant Adkinson, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
