The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Platoon Sergeant Thomas H. Barmore (ASN: RA-53179682), United States Army, for gallantry in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 17 June 1968 while serving with Company D, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date while Sergeant Barmore was acting as the Platoon Leader of a tank platoon on a reconnaissance operation, the unit was subjected to intensive enemy small arms, automatic weapons and anti-tank grenade fire from a heavily entrenched enemy force. Reacting instantly, he maneuvered his platoon into an assault formation and disseminated an intensive barrage of suppressive fire. When the lead vehicle sustained a direct hit from a rocket propelled grenade round, Sergeant Barmore directed his tank into the lead of the column and directed an intense volume of fire upon the hostile elements, pinning them down long enough to permit the evacuation of his wounded comrades. Suddenly his own vehicle received a direct hit which damaged the vehicle and injured his driver. Completely ignoring the intense enemy fire, he attempted to climb out of his turret to aid his injured comrade, but was hurled back into the turret by the impact of a small arms round. Although in intense pain, he again moved to an exposed position, fired upon and killed the hostile troops and aided his comrade. Refusing medical attention, he continued leading the assault until the enemy were overrun. Platoon Sergeant Barmore’s dedication to duty and disregard for his personal safety were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
