Headquarters, 63d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 33 (March 12, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Robert M. MacGowan (ASN: 0-1179137), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery C, 862d Field Artillery Battalion, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 17 February 1945, in the vicinity of Bliesgerwieler, Germany. Lieutenant MacGowan was forward observer with an assault platoon in their initial enemy attack. It appeared that his platoon was disturbed over the high explosives falling near them. To assure his men, he analyzed the situation, and with utter disregard for his personal safety, stood up facing enemy fire, and led them to the point of attack, continuing to adjust artillery fire as he advanced. As a result of his bravery and superior leadership, a strong enemy counterattack was repulsed and the objective as taken without casualties. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
