The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal John D. Erheardt (ASN: 15402204), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company M, 3d Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 23 January 1945, in the vicinity of Bennwihr, France. With utter disregard for his own safety, Corporal Erheardt volunteered to go into a known Schu-mine field to aid in evacuating four wounded soldiers. He made repeated trips, under intense enemy fire, into a field which was known to be sown with Schu-mines and obscured by more than a foot of snow. Corporal Erheardt’s courage reflects great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
