The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) James D. Beckett (ASN: 0-24618), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, 1st Battalion, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 17 February 1945, in the vicinity of Hanweiller, Germany. At a critical point in the crossing of the Saar River, observing that the attack on an enemy strong point had come to a halt, Major Beckett took over command, and in the face of strong hostile resistance personally led the assaulting platoon, effecting the reduction of its entire garrison of over one hundred, and capturing three officers and sixty men. Although seriously wounded, he remained with and directed assaulting troops until the conclusion of the action, and did not permit himself to be evacuated until he had reported the situation to his commander. Major Beckett’s heroism and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
