Headquarters, 63d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 31 (March 11, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Herbert C. Vaughan, Jr. (ASN: 0-545696), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 23 January 1945, in the vicinity of Bennwihr, France. During the attack on Hill 216, Lieutenant Vaughan observed a member of his platoon injured by a Schu-mine and unhesitatingly went to his aid. As he moved to rescue the wounded man, he stepped on a mine which blew off his foot but continued to crawl toward the wounded man. While engaged in this heroic act, Lieutenant Vaughan was killed when he crawled over another mine. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
