The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Theodore R. Swing (ASN: 36875326), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 31 January 1945, in the vicinity of Neunkirchen, France. Accompanying the leading squad of his platoon in a raid on an enemy-held area, Sergeant Swing was wounded by enemy small arms fire. The squad was pinned down by enemy automatic weapons fire, but Sergeant Swing, disregarding his own wound, continuously exposed himself by moving about, offering help, advice and encouragement to the squad leader and members of the squad. The safe return of the squad and such outstanding leadership reflect great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
