The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Merrill W. Gore (ASN: 39339055), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 3 January 1945, in the vicinity of Gros Rederching, France. Although severely injured about the face and legs by exploding enemy artillery and mortar fire, Sergeant Gore disregarded much needed medical aid and remained with his mortar section to direct heavy and accurate fire on the enemy positions. His action played a major part in turning back an organized enemy attack and inflicted heavy casualties on them. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
