The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Clinton W. Keeter (ASN: 39139577), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 255th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division. On 7 February 1945, in the vicinity of Woelfling, France, Sergeant Keeter led seventeen men to take and hold an enemy wooded area. Pinned down by machine gun fire, he organized a flanking element and knocked out the position. The group moved forward and was met by a frontal counter attack. Sergeant Keeter’s superior leadership and organization of hasty defenses repulsed this attack. Later, another counterattack was received and repulsed. This time the position was held until relieved the following day. Sergeant Keeter’s magnificent courage and outstanding leadership resulted in obtaining important terrain, and forced the enemy to change his defense. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
