The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Technical Sergeant] James S. Settineri (ASN: 0-2006851), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action in January 1945 by assuming command of his platoon upon loss of his Platoon Leader and successfully capturing an enemy pillbox position. Lieutenant Settineri advanced alone and encountered two enemy soldiers. Realizing his carbine was frozen, he waved his weapon and yelled, confusing the enemy and effecting their capture. Advancing further, he faced an enemy machine gun position and, with utter disregard for his personal safety, leaped into the emplacement, putting the gun out of action and capturing the crew of two. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
