The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Technician Fifth Grade Erwin M. Suggs (ASN: 34947603), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy while serving with Company M, 3d Battalion, 242d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division on 18 April 1946, in Vienna, Austria. When an Austrian kitchen worker accidentally allowed vaporized gasoline to fill the kitchen of Company M, it was ignited by other already burning stoves. The sudden flash of fire that enveloped the room momentarily blinded and dazed one of the Company M Cooks who had been engrossed with preparation of a meal. With utter disregard for personal safety Corporal Suggs remained in the flame-filled room until he had located the soldier and led him to a window from which he knocked out the glass and assisted the stunned man to safety. Corporal Sugg’s prompt and courageous actions undoubtedly saved the soldier from more serious injury and are great credit upon himself and the armed forces of the United States.
