The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Technician Fourth Grade Nick M. Groziak (ASN: 36672846), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with the enemy while serving with Service Company, 242d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division on 25 April 1945, in Wertheim, Germany. Seeing two soldiers struggling for their lives after their kayak had overturned in a deep channel of the swift Main River at Wertheim, Germany, Sergeant Groziak quickly threw off his helmet and weapon and swam to their aid. He overcame the struggles of one of the drowning men, towed him to the river’s edge and carried him to safety while a companion rescued the other man. This deed of heroism was responsible for saving the life of the soldier.
