The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Raffaele B. Rumi (ASN: 42187448), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 242d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 26 April 1945, near Berg, Germany. As first scout for his company, Private Rumi was ranging far ahead of the unit when he discovered a heavily mined roadblock covered by enemy machine gun fire at the outskirts of the town. After the first burst of machine gun fire missed him, Private Rumi hit the ground and worked his way forward to within twenty five yards of the enemy position. He then opened fire on the installation killing three Germans and capturing six, although suffering a severe head wound. Private Rumi’s gallant action and outstanding initiative permitted the company to continue its uninterrupted advance.
