Headquarters, 42d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 135 (1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Thomas Edward Moore, Jr. (ASN: 0-26615), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery B, 402d Field Artillery Battalion, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 18 March 1945, near Ludwigswinkel, Germany. Lieutenant Moore was forward observer adjusting artillery fire when the Infantry unit supported by his Battalion was held up by an intense crossfire from enemy machine guns. Disregarding his own safety, Lieutenant Moore exposed himself to the hostile fire to adjust on the machine guns and deliberately placed the fire of his own batteries within fifty yards of his position, destroying the German guns. He then exposed himself again to adjust fire on a hostile pillbox and a third time braved heavy fire to accomplish the destruction of additional machine gun positions. By his outstanding courage and devotion to duty, Lieutenant Moore prevented heavy casualties and enabled the Infantry to continue its advance. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Moore, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
