The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Technical Sergeant] James R. Lindsey (ASN: 0-2006318), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Anti-Tank Company, 242d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 9 January 1945 near Hatten, France. While Sergeant Lindsey was engaged in moving the two anti-tank gun squads under his command into position to repel a threatened tank attack, twelve enemy tanks followed by armored vehicles and infantry emerged from a woods. Utterly disregarding his own safety, Sergeant Lindsey exposed himself to heavy enemy artillery, automatic weapons and small arms fire to adjust his guns on the enemy. When a gunner was killed, Sergeant Lindsey immediately manned the gun and destroyed a tank. When his accurate fire forced the tanks to retreat, he directed the fire of high explosive shells at the infantry. Sergeant Lindsey’s gallant actions eliminated four Mark IV tanks and two personnel carriers and inflicted more than sixty casualties on the enemy.
