The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant [then Staff Sergeant] James C. Logsdon (ASN: 20615992), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 242d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 8 January 1945, at Hatten, France. During the fanatical German attack on Hatten, Sergeant Logsdon, a squad leader, saw a comrade fall, a casualty to direct fire from Tiger tanks. He boldly braved the deadly fire and carried the wounded man a distance of 250 yards to a place of safety, from where he could be evacuated for medical aid. Sergeant Logsdon then returned through the intense and deadly fire to his squad. Through his gallant action in imperiling his own life, Sergeant Logsdon saved the life of a wounded comrade.
