The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Staff Sergeant Joseph T. Conaty (ASN: 31119411), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with the enemy while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 222d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division. On 25 December 1944, at Strasbourg, France, when one of the members of his squad, while in an abandoned power plant, came in contact with a live conduit carrying between 3,000 and 4,000 volts of electricity, thereby sustaining a severe shock which rendered him unconscious, Sergeant Conaty unhesitatingly knocked the man from the power line and, administering artificial respiration, and brought him back to consciousness. His quick thinking, immediate action, and knowledge of first aid were responsible for saving another man’s life at the risk of his own.
