The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Edward B. Mulcahy (ASN: 11071160), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 222d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 30 April 1945, near Ettelben, Germany. Although seriously wounded in the chest by enemy flak fire while leading a combat patrol near Ettelben, Germany, Sergeant Mulcahy ordered his men to cover and organized them for a fire fight with the enemy. In the fierce fighting that followed, Sergeant Mulcahy was injured again, but succeeded in killing three of the enemy. In spite of seven wounds, he again organized his men and led them in a flanking maneuver that destroyed the enemy position and captured four of the remaining Germans. Through his gallant actions, Sergeant Mulcahy eliminated a strong enemy outpost from his company’s route of advance.
