Headquarters, 42d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 38 (1946)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Charles Montalvo (ASN: 38680459), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 222d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 28 April 1945, near Rain, Germany. When his Rainbow Ranger Platoon was pinned down by the murderous fire of an enemy ambush near Rain, Germany, Private Montalvo volunteered to go for reinforcements. Crawling through the withering machine gun barrage, he had almost reached cover when he was wounded in the leg. Continuing on his mission despite his painful injuries, he located a platoon of light tanks and guided them to the German positions. Directing a terrific volume of tank fire, he effected the rescue of the Rangers. Through his great daring and gallant actions, Private Montalvo, although severely wounded, turned a would be disaster into an enemy rout.
