The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) David B. Skidmore (ASN: 0-1331670), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 222d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 18 April 1945, at Furth, Germany. When his platoon was subjected to heavy sniper fire during the fighting for Furth, Germany, Lieutenant Skidmore, rather than endanger the lives of his men, moved forward in an effort to locate the origin of the enemy fire. While reconnoitering through the streets and ruins of burned buildings, he was seriously wounded. His gallant action was a source of inspiration to his platoon and enabled the attack to be carried forward with irresistible force until the city surrendered to our forces.
