The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Lloyd A. Schoby (ASN: 36691082), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 222d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 4 April 1945 at Wurzburg, Germany. While his squad was engaged in a fire fight with an enemy machine gun located in front of his company, Private Schoby heard a movement to the left rear and moved out to investigate, discovering three enemy soldiers entering the hallway of the building which his squad was occupying. He immediately opened fire, killing two of the enemy. His rifle misfired as he aimed at the third enemy who turned and fled out of the door. Private Schoby followed him, applying corrective action to his rifle on the run. The German turned and fired but missed, then took cover in a doorway and opened fire again. Private Schoby took cover behind a fence and from this position killed the German with a hand grenade. Through his outstanding courage and aggressiveness, Private Schoby, single-handed, accounted for three of the enemy and prevented his squad from being cut off from their company.
