The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Clifford E. Sloop (ASN: 34980175), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 392d Field Artillery Battalion, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 19 March 1945 at Schonau, Germany. Private Sloop was serving as a member of a liaison section from his battalion which was supporting the 3rd Battalion, 222nd Infantry at Schonau, Germany on 19 March 1945. A heavy concentration of enemy 88 mm. artillery and mortar fire killed five of our infantrymen and wounded about twenty others. Seeing some of the wounded men lying in an exposed position in the street outside the building in which they were located at the time, Private Sloop and one other member of his liaison section voluntarily left their place of shelter in the basement of the building and, disregarding the intense fire from enemy mortars and artillery, each went out into the street and brought back a wounded man. The gallant and courageous act of Private Sloop in going to the aid of another man in the face of severe hostile fire was responsible for saving the wounded man’s life.
