The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Stanley D. Phillips (ASN: 33859561), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 222d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 17 March 1945, in the Hardt Mountains, France. During an assault by his platoon in the Hardt Mountains, Private Phillips advanced under hostile artillery fire to reconnoiter enemy positions, deliberately exposing himself to intense small arms fire in order that the enemy positions might be disclosed. While moving forward in the face of the heavy fire he became a casualty. His heroic action enabled the rest of his squad to advance under concealment and destroy the enemy strong-point to permit the continued advance of the platoon.
