The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Corporal George Washington Clute, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 19 March 1865, while serving with Company I, 14th Michigan Infantry, in action at Bentonville, North Carolina. In a charge, Corporal Clute captured the flag of the 40th North Carolina (Confederate States of America), the flag being taken in a personal encounter with an officer who carried and defended it.
