Headquarters, 42d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 87 (1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Roy Steele (ASN: 32767487), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 222d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 16 March 1945, in the Hardt Mountains, France. On 16 March 1945, during the offensive in the Hardt Mountains, Sergeant Steele, rocket launcher squad leader, received word that an enemy tank, which had pinned his company down had been knocked out. He led his squad to the forward slope of the hill in front of the company when the tank opened fire, wounding eight men of the squad. Sergeant Steele, despite a heavy concentration of fire from the tank, left cover and crawled from man to man, administering first aid and carrying them to a place of safety. Though at one time he was blown from his feet by an enemy shell he recovered at once and continued carrying the wounded off the field until every man was safely removed.
