Headquarters, 42d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 159 (September 18, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Jamiel H. Mattar (ASN: 38516325), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 222d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 15 March 1945 in the Hardt Mountains, France. When the squad in which he was serving as a rifleman was held up by strong enemy opposition, Private Mattar made his way forward to a position from which he could open effective fire on the enemy. Drawing the enemy fire on himself, he enabled the squad to maneuver around to the flank from where they destroyed the enemy emplacement. During this gallant action, he was mortally wounded. By his outstanding courage and aggressiveness, Private Mattar played a major role in the successful attack.
