The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Theodore M. Swayne, Jr. (ASN: 32113081), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 222d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 15 March 1945, in the Hardt Mountains, France. During the attack on Hill 384, the squad led by Sergeant Swayne was held up by fire from an enemy rocket launcher. Sergeant Swayne located the weapon, worked his way forward until he came within range, and put it out of action with a hand grenade. His squad then overran the position and continued its advance. By his outstanding courage and devotion to duty, Sergeant Swayne played a major part in the capture of the objective.
