Headquarters, 42d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 147 (1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Clarence M. Stamey (ASN: 34968609), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 222d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 9 March 1945, near Wingen, France. When the patrol of which he was a member encountered a system of enemy connecting trenches, gun emplacements and wire entanglements, Private Stamey delivered a hail of automatic rifle fire which put two of the hostile enemy machine gun positions out of action. When the patrol was ordered to withdraw because of heavy artillery, mortar, and machine gun fire, he remained behind to cover the withdrawal. Through his outstanding courage, aggressiveness and professional skill, Private Stamey played a major role in the success of the patrol which counted twelve enemy dead, captured six prisoners and gained invaluable information for future operations.
