The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Ted E. Gordinier (ASN: 0-1323921), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 222d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 24 January 1945, near Neubourg, France. When a platoon which had the mission of establishing an outpost line of resistance withdrew because of a strong enemy attack, Lieutenant Gordinier met the withdrawing platoon and, disregarding heavy artillery and mortar fire, reorganized it, setting up a defense that was able to hold off a subsequent major enemy attack. When the fire abated somewhat, he established a command post in a nearby building and contacted supporting artillery, directing effective fire on the enemy. Later, when the enemy infiltrated and attacked his position from the rear, he manned a machine gun from a doorway, inflicting heavy casualties and causing the enemy to withdraw in a confused state. By his aggressive leadership and professional skill, Lieutenant Gordinier prevented the enemy from taking the town of Neubourg, France, one of their major objectives in their last attempt to regain Alsace.
