The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Thomas Redman (ASN: 6396159), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 222d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division. On 25 January 1945, near Uhlwiller, France, while in command of his machine gun section, Sergeant Redman was seriously wounded about the face and arm by enemy machine gun fire. Finding that one of his squad leaders and one of his machine gunners were also wounded, Sergeant Redman made his way to their gun and fired on the enemy until he lost consciousness from the effects of his wounds. Regaining consciousness a short while later, he again operated the machine gun, refusing to leave until his squad leader and machine gunner had first been evacuated.
