The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Klare C. Moyer (ASN: 0-157546), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 222d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 24 January 1945 near Schweighausen, France. When a large force of enemy troops attacked our positions and forced a withdrawal, Lieutenant Moyer was ordered to reestablish the main line of resistance with his heavy machine gun platoon and a supporting rifle platoon. Upon contacting the superior enemy force and finding it impossible to occupy the former gun positions, he committed his men as a rifle platoon and led them in two attacks under heavy German mortar, automatic weapon and small arms fire, until he was seriously wounded in the leg. By his gallantry in the face of overwhelming odds, Lieutenant Moyer contributed to the defense of Schweighausen and gained valuable time for the preparation of further resistance to the determined enemy effort.
